PAPILIO ANTIMACHUS

After a break of almost seven years, Jorge de Luis returns to drawing with this version of another of the photos from Steven Klein's X-tatic Process session with Madonna, which had already inspired Flexible.

In the original photo, Madonna is wearing a lace mask in the shape of a butterfly, here replaced by a real butterfly of the Papilio Antimachus species, one of the largest butterflies in existence. It can grow up to 23 cm in diameter and has no known predators, as it is highly venomous.

The work shows a symbiotic relationship between this insect and Madonna herself, who remains immune to the butterfly's venom and uses it to protect herself, as a symbolic mask that evokes the natural instinct of human self-protection.
