The music video Nothing Really Matters, a single from Madonna's album Ray of Light directed by the Swede Johan Renck, was inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha, as was this reproduction. Madonna understood the figure of the geisha as a metaphor for the artist, both privileged and imprisoned. From the video clip De Luis discovers the novel and, years later, the film, where he becomes obsessed with the scene of Sayuri's Dance, represented in this work as a perfect blend of beauty, delicacy and sadness.
